World Press Photo 2016 People, second prize stories, Daniel Ochoa de Olza, Spain.

The image represents the feast of Las Mayas, in Colmenar Viejo, Madrid. The event, held annually in May to celebrate spring, has its origins in a pagan ritual. Altars are built and decorated with plants and flowers by five or six different groups, that choose one young girl in a white blouse to sit and be a ‘Maya’.

This is a stunning example of how a traditional ritual can be represented, connecting past and future through the eyes of a photographer and its international language. This is not only an image, but  a whole story that talks directly to the public.
